Regrow Green Onion

Updated: Jul 10, 2020

Did you know that you can easily regrow your green onions, with only the roots and a container of water?

While you're at home, make good use of both your time and green onions. And you can do all of this just by using plastic containers that may have otherwise been thrown away. After this project, you will NEVER need to buy green onions again.

Be sure to watch my step by step video on how to regrow green onions!

Making The Container

To create a glass to hold the green onions in, you can reuse a plastic container. Any container will do as long it is rigid and tall enough to support growing green onions. In this case, I used an empty peanut jar.

Once you have chosen your preferred holder, make sure that it is clean, does not hold any food residue, and that any labeling is removed so as to allow sunlight to reach the plant as much as possible.

Then, cut the container to a height that provides the green onions with enough support to lean on, around 3-4 inches at least.

Once the container is ready, you can begin growing your onions!

When cutting the green onion roots, make sure to leave as much of the white tip as possible, 2-3 inches at least. The more of the white tip left, the faster the scallions will regrow since growing back the white tip will take the longest time in the process.

Place your green onions in the container, in rows based by height. The tallest green onions at the back, and the smallest in the front. This will give the slower-paced green onions a chance to compete with their brethren for sunlight.

Then, fill the container with water until all of the roots are visibly covered, about an inch or two.

Maintenance

I have found that green onions require minimal effort, and yet yield best results when taken care of properly.

To ensure the growth of your green onions, make sure to replace their water every 1-2 days and clean them of any residue.

Growth

You should notice visible growth after the first 2 days, and by the fifth day, there should be a noticeable length of new, regrown scallions.

Pro Tip

You can use the top of your plastic item, as shown in the picture to use as another container to ensure that no plastic is waste and polluted.

If it is not possible, make sure to recycle any plastic you can't reuse.
